1. Musically, when did it first begin for Satoshi Tomiie ?
Satoshi Tomiie: In my teenage time.. Last century... LOL!
2. Yourself, hailing from Japan, how's the EDM compare to Europe or Northern America ?
Satoshi Tomiie: Our culture seems very quiet sometimes but when it's about music, very enthusiastic and getting excited really easily.. Compared to the population we have, the club scene is not very big but it has been very healthy. You know sometimes the scene heats up so quickly and dies. I feel lucky that our scene has been strong and still is. International Djs passing through Japan every weekend and seems like all are enjoying (including Dj's of course), you can ask any Dj's have experiences to play in clubs in Tokyo, I am sure the most of them say the same thing.. I am not saying it because I am Japanese, we have surely great scene, especially in Tokyo.
3. How would You describe and/or define the style of music that You create and perform ?
Satoshi Tomiie: Quality electronic dance music. The groove has to have some 'funk' in it.
4. Tell me about Your new EP. The "Back To Basics" EP, the one released under Your alias, MES. What's the EP consist of ?
Satoshi Tomiie: The best way is checking
SAW Recordings' profile on SoundCloud, the sound itself tells 1000 better than in some words.. ;) Motorcitysoul delivered amazing remix. We are now preparing the part 2, featuring Andre Lodemann and Mabaan Soul remixes as well as my unreleased dub version.
5. Who's responsible for the remix of the EP ?
Satoshi Tomiie: Motorcitysoul, Andre Lodemann and Mabaan Soul
6. Will You be doing any tours in order to spread the word about the EP ?
Satoshi Tomiie: Like always.. I am on the road all the time.. Yes and letting people know this EP is out already.
7. Besides MES, have You got a different alias ?
Satoshi Tomiie: Hmmm according to Discogs.. LOL Black Shells, Loop 7 and Shellshock.
8. Put Satoshi Tomiie's style and MES' style. What's so different about them two ?
Satoshi Tomiie: The surface of my 'style' is ever changing, the core part is always the same but I love challenges. Mes project is about revisiting the my root influences, producing music with my current musical style and groove. The influences I have got in the early days of House Music is a part of the foundation of musical style, taste etc.
9. In terms of A&Ring, You are the owner of Saw Recordings. What have You done so far and what's Your goal with the label ?
Satoshi Tomiie: This is the year of celebrating 10th birthday, We have released about 80 singles and 7 albums, various artists from Chab, Nathan Fake, Rino Cerrone, Guy Gerber to myself including Bipath and Mes to name a few. New artists Doomwork, Mabaan Soul's EP and singles are in the pipeline and preparing the 10th anniversary EP & album. Our policy and goal is introducing quality electronic dance music regardless of its style.
10. Back to the production side, explain the process as to when You are coming with Your melodic concepts and ideas.
Satoshi Tomiie: It's always interesting how an idea 'translates' into actual sound. There are particular notes and tones in my head but a lot of time it's abstract images. It's like trying to explaining your dream to someone.. Translation is not always accurate, but in many case it leads me to some interesting direction and places (musically speaking). This 'translation' takes me to another area where another unexpected ideas come up.. Etc. etc. So unpredictable, this is one of reason I love producing music.
11. How's Your New York for You so far ? Don't You find it far from home ?
Satoshi Tomiie: I love it, I have been there almost 2 decades, definitely has become my second hometown.
12. Have You any last words for the ones reading the interview ?
Satoshi Tomiie: Thank you for supporting me for long time and hope you will for the years to come. Check out my new single, Mes 'Back to Basics', part 1 with Motorcitysoul Remix is out now and part 2 featuring Andre Lodemann and Mabaan Soul Remix will be out soon ;)
