Interview with Marcie    ( 02.07.2008 - 21:50 GMT UTC )

Interview with Marcie
    1. Since I have told a few people that I will add Your name to our list alongside other female vocalists such as Jes Brieden, Kirsty Hawkshaw, Jennifer Rene, Tiff Lacey, Elsa Hill, Anthya and also Sasja Borjesen, they have been asking me what is the deal with Your name, since they don`t know where the Web part comes from ?!

Marcie: I think your question is referring to the 'web' in my website addresses: www.webmarcie.com, and www.myspace.com/webmarcie! The explanation is pretty simple. When I made my first site, 'marcie.com' was already taken. I had no idea what else to use. I drew a blank. So, I used the web in webmarcie to define that the site was simply.... Marcie on the web! Over the years, 'webmarcie' has jokingly become a character for my online presence and persona. I guess that 'non-web Marcie' is the one who does all the behind the scenes work, and writes music in her pajamas, struggles with ideas, etc. Then the websites show my music in its final form, and the fancier abbreviated versions of the art and image! But really it was webmarcie because I couldn't use marcie by itself.

    2. What was it that really made You decide You wanted to become a vocalist/singer ?

Marcie: I have always wanted to be a performer. I started dancing when I was 4 years old. For awhile I did not know if I wanted to be a Dancer, Singer, or Pianist. I tried to focus on all three areas until I was nearly 20. I was in college at that point, and overworked with my school responsibilities. I wanted to get my degree in Psychology, and I realized I had to focus mainly on one musical area, or I would be stretched too thin. At that point, singing was my favorite activity. I minored in Dance in college, and I now use dance in my performances. I use the piano when I write songs. So in the end I still use bits of all the musical activities I have always loved.

    3. In a few words, how would You describe Your music and especially Your lyrics ?

Marcie: Truthful, poetic, double-meaning, reflective, fun, cheeky, dreamy, confrontational... it depends on the tune.

    4. Talking about Your musical EDM career, please share with us, some of Your goals or else, future goals, thanks indeed.

Marcie: My goal is to keep putting out good tracks, and new ideas. I love to write, and am grateful that EDM has allowed me to get my songs out to a wide audience. I am very excited about my radio show, 'Marcie presents Behind The Lyric', and I look forward to doing new episodes! It has been a lot of fun to get to know the amazingly talented guests that have shared their stories on the show. This community of EDM artists and fans is extremely inspiring and interconnected, and I am happy to be a part of it. I think music is a great unifier, and I hope to be someone who is helping bring people together.

    5. Please tell me also, how did You hook up with the Russian superstar, Vadim Soloviev for the "Stay with me" a-must-have chooone for the vocal Trance lovers ?

Marcie: I met Vadim online around the time that his tune with Kate Cameron was out. I really loved the track, and he liked some of my work, and we decided to do a collaboration. We worked hard on 'Stay With Me', and we are both very excited about how it has been received, and about the amazing remixes that are out with the release.

    6. Aside from pushing Your current project made together with Vadim Soloviev, what are some of Your future plans ?

Marcie: I have a lot of new music in the works! This summer sees the release of my EP with D:Folt on System Recordings. I am very excited about it because not only does it have four great new tracks, but it also has a massive remix package from a wide variety of talent. I also have some other singles that I am looking forward to, including a very personal track I wrote with Eddie Sender, and another fun track coming on vinyl with Pakka.

    7. With such huge support coming from names like Armin van Buuren himself, Dj Shah, Markus Schulz, Pete Tong, and the enigmatic duo, Gabriel & Dresden, Ferry corsten, and the list goes on and on, how do You feel that Your career approached a level that several other female vocalists would love to reach, how do You feel about it ?

Marcie: I am very grateful for the support I have gotten, and also for the talented collaborators with whom I share my success. I have been working extremely hard for years, and have had alot of hard times where I did not know if I would get to where I hoped I would be. So... I guess I am happy right now that hard work is paying off. I think I have learned a lot along the way, and I am glad I haven't given up.

    8. You have serious longevity in the EDM industry, so what advice would You give to some of these young female vocalists out there, that would love to follow Your path becoming what You are at the moment ?

Marcie: Thank you! That means a lot to me that people would look to me for advice. The best thing I can advise is to work hard. Some people get lucky and are in the right place at the right time. Some people are extraordinarily gifted, and the first thing they make is a hit. But most people have to work extremely hard, and reach deep down inside themselves and pull out every bit of strength and energy they can muster. If you have a goal, you have to stay committed to it, and find your way around obstacles. I believe creativity is a nymph that is hard to pin down, but I also believe in self discipline. You never know what you will come up with unless you stay open to your own ideas and try any and everything you can think of.

Also, I believe in Karma. If you want to become successful, and still like yourself when you get there... you have to act with respect for yourself and others through the good and bad times.

    9. what would You say is the most satisfying part of what You do so far ?

Marcie: I get to sing and create! I love it. I have met some incredible people along the way who I am grateful to have in my life.

    10. What would You consider to be Your biggest accomplishment musically ?

Marcie: I am not really sure about this. I like a lot of my songs very much, but I think I have a lot left to learn about songwriting and performance. I hope that I will only get better.

    11. We are currently experiencing jacked-up prices in the worldwide EDM and we are in the era of bootlegging and remixing so tell me why EDM lovers should go out and buy Your new stuff from any digital shops or local music shops too ?

Marcie: Buying someone's art is simply one form of respect for an artist as a person. I think if someone likes my music, then buying it is a way to show that they want to support my ability to make more. It shows they recognize what was sacrificed to make the music. People buy many things they use for enjoyment, so why not music ?

It is really just basic economics. Our lives depend on having money... that's why people charge for their services, and we assign a monetary value to almost everything. I don't necessarily want to charge people for my music, but I need to earn a living. I am compelled to make music no matter what, but I can't make music unless I can first pay rent, buy food, buy healthcare, etc. I need to earn money in order to be able to live, and I have to be alive to be able to make music.

Music in general makes life more enjoyable for a lot of people. If someone can afford my tunes, then I appreciate them buying them. If someone can't afford them, then I am still happy to share the music with them via free podcasts, dj set downloads, streaming links online, etc. I guess I have to trust that people will do what they can do to help each other. I hope people do not try to get as much as they can for as little as they can at the expense of others. That would be a sad way to have a society. We have to respect each other more than that!

    12. Anything else You would like to add before we end up this exclusive interview or anything You would love to say to the TranceSound.net community or anyone reading this interview ?

Marcie: Thank you for your support. It is fun to hear what you are thinking about my work. Please feel free to send me a message on myspace or email through my website.
